Hundreds of children and parents joined the International Children’s Day festivities

Over 400 children, parents and volunteers participated on Sunday at the International Children’s Day organized by Policy Center for Roma and Minorities in collaboration with the District 5 Mayoralty, on Livezilor Stret in Bucharest. The event was dedicated to the children in the Ferentari area and in particular to the pupils from the Elementary School no.136 where Policy Center for Roma and Minorities launched in October 2010 the Alternative Educational Club with the financial support of the Netherlands Embassy in Romania. Also, pupils from the Elementary School no.147 were involved in the event, as we plan to open a new club at this school.

Children against racism and discrimination

The “Mass Football Day” Cup event, held on May 25, was a great opportunity for the two football teams from the Alternative Education Club from the Elementary School no. 136 in Ferentari to show what they learned during their weekly soccer practice. The activity is coordinated by ex-professional football player (junior league), Laurențiu Gheorghe who used to play for one of Romania’s most notorious football clubs, Dinamo București. For more than a year, around 30 children from Ferentari had the chance to take part in weekly football practices and compete in local and regional football tournaments.

Debates on racism and discrimination with Romanian teenagers

Policy Center for Roma and Minorities, in partnership with the Romanian Association for Debate, Oratory and Rhetoric (ARDOR), PATRIR (Peace Action, Training and Research Institute of Romania), Carturești Bookshops and the “Zile si Nopti” magazine” organize from May 27 to June 8 the national caravan „Challenge against discrimination”. The series of events targets high school students from five major cities in Romania, including the capital, Bucharest. The caravan format relies on debates as an educational instrument meant to stimulate critical thinking on social issues such as discrimination, racism and negative cultural stereotypes.

Strangers Script Lab, a new way of writing films in Romania

Policy Center for Roma and Minorities in partnership with Strada Film and the Script Association, with the support of the European Commission, launched today the first script laboratory in Romania, Strangers Script Lab. The lab will take place in two different locations throughout the country between July and October.

Football and social inclusion in Budapest

More than 10 children aged 11 to 14 and a representative of our organization attended the “Football for Opportunities” International Workshop in Budapest, at the invitation of the Polgar Foundation, between May 13 and 14. The children are enrolled in the football classes at the Alternative Education Club.

E timpul să afirmăm că predarea religiei în școli pune în pericol laicitatea statului român?

Moțiunea dorește să pună un reflector asupra felului în care se vede laicitatea în România – ca relație de separare între stat și biserici – din prisma alegerii educaționale de a preda religia în școlile de stat. În comparație, în Italia educația catolică religioasă este materie opțională, în Germania situația diferă de la un land la altul iar în Olanda nu este prevăzută predarea niciunei religii, în schimb există școli confesionale sprijinite de stat.
