Yesterday, Policy Center for Roma and Minorities and the British Embassy staff in Bucharest chose to celebrate ‘one year to go’ to the London Olympics with the Roma community in Ferentari, one of the most deprived districts of Bucharest. The community faces significant problems from discrimination, unemployment, crime and drug addiction, but has turned to sport in response.

The Beyond Sports international organization announced earlier this week that Policy Center for Roma and Minorities was shortlisted for the Beyond Sport Awards 2011, at the “Best New Project” category, for its efforts to use sport as a social inclusion tool and for combating racism and discrimination.

Between July 6 and 10 Policy Center for Roma was an official guest at the 2011 edition of the Mondiali Antirazzisti, a multicultural festival using sports as a way of tackling racism and any form of discrimination, organized by Unione Italiana Sport per Tutti and its partners. The event which was attended by 5000 participants from over 50 countries and took place in Bosco Albergati (Castelfranco Emilia – Modena) in Italy. Through the four days, a series of sports tournaments and music concerts aimed to promote a message of solidarity, inclusion and cooperation between people.

British Council and Policy Center for Roma and Minorities organized in Bucharest, between 2-9 July, an international exchange programme that included representatives from several non-governmental organizations in Oxford (Great Britain) and Göteborg (Sweden). The meeting aimed to introduce the participants to the problems the Roma communities from Bucharest and its surroundings are facing and to offer a wide view upon the social inclusion practices developed in Romania for this minority, with an emphasis on educational projects. At the same time, the exchange wanted to identify collaboration opportunities between civil society organizations in Great Britain, Sweden and Romania.
