“United against racism!” – friendly football match International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Policy Center for Roma and Minorities, the Romanian Football Federation, The National Council for Combating Discrimination (NCCD) and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Bucharest organize a friendly football match on Sunday, the 20th of March. The participants include representatives of the diplomatic corps commissioned at Bucharest and popular names from the Romanian civil society and media.

The event is organized one day before the celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and it represents an action aimed at sensitizing the public opinion and at raising awareness with respect to the consequences of violence and racism.

The football match will take place at the Romanian national team’s training center in Mogoșoaia and will start at 11:30.

The “United against racism!” event is part of the REACT public awareness campaign initiated by the Policy Center for Roma and Minorities in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and supported by the European Commission. The objective of the campaign is to raise awareness about the social issues that Roma population faces and to change negative attitudes against this ethnic minority.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is celebrated every year on the 21st of March. Using this day that was proclaimed in 1966, the UN General Assembly made an appeal to the international community in order to intensify efforts aimed at eliminating all forms of racial discrimination.

The event will be preceded by a press conference that will start at 11:00, with the participation of: foreign affairs counsellor Anton Niculescu, Her Excellency M.W.J.A. (Tanya) van Gool (Ambassador of the Netherlands), Valeriu Nicolae (President of Policy Center for Roma and Minorities), Ionuț Lupescu (general director of the Romanian Football Federation), and Csaba Ferenc Asztalos (president of NCCD).
