632 people participated Sunday morning at the “Vivicitta – Sport links people” run, organized in Bucharest by Policy Center for Roma and Minorities and UISP (Unione Italiana Sport per Tutti).

Regardless of their nationality or ethnicity, participants aged 5 to 79 ran on a 3 km track to draw attention on discrimination and on the importance of promoting diversity. The third edition of the race took place on the following route: Charles de Gaulle Square (starting point) – Constantin Prezan Boulevard – Kiseleff – Victoriei Square – Aviatorilor Boulevard – Charles de Gaulle Square (finish line).

“Sports is an excellent means of social inclusion and it also represents a priority for our organization”, said Valeriu Nicolae, president of Policy Center for Roma and Minorities. “Among the participants there were also a few children from School no. 136 in Ferentari. This meant a lot to them because it made them feel included in the Romanian society. Being able to gather hundreds of people at the event is a positive sign for our country, as Romanians are starting to realize the importance of combating discrimination and promoting diversity”, added Nicolae.

“I am pleasantly surprised by the participation of lots of young people and students at the event, which makes me confident in the power of the new generation to bring about a positive change in Romania. Still, I think that no matter their age, people should be more open to participate at this sort of events”, said Aurelia Suciu, General Secretary of the Federația Română Sportul pentru Toți

The event is part of the REACT public awareness campaign initiated by Policy Center for Roma and supported by the European Commission. The objective of the campaign is to raise awareness on the social issues that Roma population faces and to change negative attitudes against them.

Italy also ran on Sunday, when 38 cities and 100,000 participants joined Vivicitta.  The good weather throughout the peninsula fostered a massive participation as the record went to Bologna where 12,000 people registered for the race. For more information about the event in Italy, click here.
