Bucharest, November 17, 2011 – Children run up and down the stairs, impatient to finish the final repetition before the arrival of almost 200 guests. Many of them already met the kids while volunteering in the Alternative Education Club – people from embassies, ministries and other public institutions, as well as from NGOs and from the community in Ferentari.
It was a great joy for us at the Policy Center to bring together all these people and to share with them a show of dance and music, talent and ambition prepared by the children from the Alternative Education Club. Us and the parents who joined watched proudly the children on the stage with Damian Draghici – their most famous teacher. He is both a role model and a friend to the children and he offers voluntarily his time to empowering the children to make the most of their talents.
The audience was very impressed by the dance show prepared by B4T (Born for Trouble) – the dance group of children from the Alternative Education Club who for one year now are trained by Trouble (a famous Romanian street dance school).
Following their performance, Damian&Brothers put on a memorable Roma show – children singing and dancing on the stage by their side and the audience moved by the vivid rhythms, by life and joyfulness.
Special thanks to Melania Medeleanu and Mihai Sturzu – two friends of the club – who presented the Gala.
The event is financed by the European Commission through the REACT campaign which aims to challenge the widespread negative attitudes towards Roma in the Romanian society through a set of innovative instruments based on movies and documentaries, alternative education and sport. Also, the Active Citizenship Gala is supported by the Roma Education Fund and the Open Society Institute.
We express our gratitude to our sponsors Bacania Coco and Stephan Pelger.
